An "ABC of The New Economy" - self-determination in food, energy, housing, social care and more - is definitely worth crowdfunding

Very please to support Stir To Action’s latest crowdfunder - aiming to produce a freely-distributed “ABC Guide to the New Economy”. Here’s our archive on them, and their pitch is embedded above and reprinted below. Donate to them here!

Who are we?

We’re Stir to Action – a co-operative using the power of democratic ownership to transform economic inequality, the climate emergency, and wider society. For 10 years we’ve been publishing STIR magazine to share ideas, tools, and examples that can transform our broken economic system.

Despite a decade of positive economic initiatives and bold political experiments since the financial crisis, we know at the ground level there’s still not enough awareness and access to resources that could support new economic models in local communities.

Once again we're all facing real political instability and economic pressure

Made worse by huge wealth inequalities, rocketing prices, an endless housing crisis, and persistent failure to take real action on climate. For all the promises from our politicians about bouncing back, levelling up, and sharing prosperity, it’s just not happening for most of us.

Why an ABC guide and movement-building events?

Despite crisis after crisis, new economic ideas are still largely unknown across communities, and it’s time for a post-pandemic movement to inspire local economic change. Our event guide and 1-1 support will support communities to build and extend their own local movements over the next few years.

The ABCs of the New Economy isn’t like other editions of our magazine. It’s an accessible ‘primer’ on all aspects of the new economy, sharing straightforward tools and ideas for workplaces, communities, and movements for change.

Your support for our campaign will fund:

  • The publication of thousands of copies of the ABCs of the New Economy

  • The distribution to hundreds of community-led organisations across the country

  • A downloadable event guide to support UK-wide movement building events

  • 1-to-1 support for community-led organisations to host movement building events

The ABCs of the New Economy ‘primer’ will feature:

  • Ways to tackle the cost of living crisis and a broken energy system at the roots

  • Introductions to mutual models that can transform an unfair housing market

  • Stories about patient-owned cooperatives that can begin to reverse the social care crisis

  • Tried-and-tested ways we can remake our food systems through community-owned enterprise
