"That's what freedom feels like, baby!" From Nowness, a rich archive of dance responses to our disconnected, demanding times

The net is many things - a mirror to our condition - which means it can also be a commons of beauty, as much as anything else. There are treasure troves everywhere, heart-stoppingly inspirational, and we’ll curate them here when we find them.

The culture and fashion website Nowness - founded by Jefferson Hack, editor and founder of Dazed and Confused, and now majority owned by the Chinese luxury publishers Modern Media - is a burgeoning archive of edgy, sublime creativity. We came upon their long-running series Just Dance a few days, and have been luxuriating in it every since. Something about dance, as we test and flex our Covid-confined limbs, that is particularly inspiring.

Nothing more inspiring than the 2017 video above, Able. From the blurb: “American choreographer Jacob Jonas, who began his career with legendary Venice Beach boardwalk dancers, the Calypso Tumblers, collaborates in this thoughtful new film with ILL-Abilities—a dance group representing the differently-abled community, basing the performance on the group's mantra: ‘No excuses, no limits’”.

Home With You: “A symphony of synchronicity set to FKA twigs’ mercurial art-pop hit” [more]

Out a few days ago, Tajabone “is a short film about the french black queer community taking pride in who they are, what they have achieved, and embracing the bodies they are in. Wearing leopard-print leotards that embody their fierce dancing styles, the stars of Tajabone use their bodies to explore the fragility, strength, and conviction at the heart of a community bonded by radical self-expression” [more]
